History of Italian Opera Course (10 Weeks)

This informative course created specifically for the Dante Alighieri Society of Massachusetts will span a period of over 300 years as it is a comprehensive survey of the operatic form from its origins in the Renaissance through the 20th century.

Opera expert Ed Tapper, will examine the stylistic changes in opera from the Baroque to the Modern Age. All of the operas discussed were written in Italian by composers of Italian birth, with a few notable, yet important, exceptions. In addition to the key operas to be presented, the course will also feature excerpts from other significant works by the great Italian masters. All operas will be video presented in the Italian with English subtitles.
